Work Experience

September 2015 - Present

May 2010 - Present

Director of Visual Storytelling

KING 5 Media Group (Seattle, WA)

I lead visual storytelling across digital, broadcast, and social platforms. I develop and mentor content creators in writing, shooting, editing, and presentation, while guiding high-profile station and company initiatives. I also serve as managing editor for special projects, overseeing a team of approximately 30 visual journalists and led staff to numerous national awards and industry recognition.

Founder & CEO

Storytellers LLC (Seattle, WA)

Social media content specialist and brand storyteller. I work as a storytelling consultant for visual news organizations and digital creators, helping them design presentation spaces, improve on-camera presence, and operate independently. I collaborate on content strategy, take on freelance shooting for digital and branded projects, and grew a niche social media community to over 25,000 journalists focused on advancing storytelling and journalism.

August 2013 - August 2015

Chief Photojournalist

WTHR-TV (Indianapolis, IN)

I oversaw visual storytelling at WTHR-TV, supervising a team of 25 photojournalists and editors. I led content development and facilitated creative production, producing both quick-turn and long-form content independently and collaboratively. After just two years of my leadership, the staff was recognized by the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) as one of the best visual storytelling stations in the nation for the first time in the station’s history.

December 2010 - August 2013

Photojournalist

KING 5 Media Group (Seattle, WA)

Created quick-turn and long-form content independently and in team settings, managed large-scale projects, collaborated across teams, and earned multiple honors, including several Emmy® Awards and National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) recognition as one of the best photojournalists in America multiple years in a row.

October 2007 - December 2010

Photojournalist

WAVY-TV (Portsmouth, VA)

This is where my storytelling expertise truly launched. After just a few months of focused mentorship and countless hours of passionate study outside of work, I emerged on the national stage. Within a year at WAVY-TV, and four years as a professional, I earned recognition from my colleagues as the best photojournalist in America, along with runner-up honors from a separate panel of industry experts.

Education

2000 - 2005

Communication and Media Studies
Indiana University of Pennsylvania

While not a high-profile university, IUP is widely recognized for its education and communications programs. I spent countless hours at the student-run TV station honing my craft and was honored with the station’s Senior of the Year Award.

1996 - 2000

Freeport Area Senior High School

A National Blue Ribbon School, this is where I discovered my love for storytelling. I was one of the rare students who knew early what my purpose was—and I never turned back.

A Bit About Me

After more than 20 years in visual storytelling—and over a decade in high-profile leadership roles—I’ve built an internationally recognized reputation through award-winning work, mentorship, and hands-on leadership. My teams and I have earned the highest honors in visual storytelling, and I bring that same passion, creativity, and commitment to excellence to every project and partnership.

At KING 5 Media Group, I lead visual storytelling across Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, platforms reaching more than two million followers, in addition to a large broadcast audience. My career focuses on optimizing storytelling across social and broadcast to increase audience retention. I’m deeply involved in scriptwriting, adapting narrative structure, designing hooks for social, production planning, and post-production feedback. I also produce my own content.

Recently, I was selected to train staff on social-first vertical storytelling, and TEGNA’s first-of-its-kind mobile app has already driven a 10x increase in viewer engagement during beta testing in Seattle.

On YouTube, I lead and grow UNSOLVED Northwest, a long-form true-crime series with its first full episode approaching one million views. Our growth has been driven by intentional thumbnail design, emotionally impactful moments, strategic narrative structure, consistent publishing, and a Shorts strategy that repurposes long-form content into high-performing short-form video. All meant to optimize retention and completion rate.

I pride myself on being a kind, calm, and patient leader who deeply cares about my team while also demanding excellence and driving innovation. I motivate teams through clear objectives and key results (OKRs), grounded in the belief that clarity is kindness and honest feedback is essential. I lead and develop teams of approximately 60 content creators, defining creative standards and building structure and efficiency where it doesn’t exist. At KING, I’ve helped foster a culture of visual innovation and creative risk-taking that’s admired across the industry, and our regional VP has recognized me as one of the industry’s top recruiters.

Beyond my work at KING, I founded and grew Storytellers LLC into a 25,000-member niche community focused on storytelling excellence and professional development in the visual journalism community. Throughout my career, I’ve helped anchors, producers, reporters, photojournalists, and video editors elevate their storytelling, creating visually powerful, audience-driven work across platforms.
